Dear Reader, a few days back we published the part 1 of puzzles topic. This is your part 2.

Now let us begin our tutorial.

Type 4: Placing Members in Groups

In type 4, you have place members in different subgroups. You will be doing this based on the given conditions. Below example is to help you.

Example Question 4: Eight friends Amar, Baskar, David, Joy, Krithick, Aathi, Kannan and Naraen are planning a trip to Mysore. There are only two cars, and following are the conditions:
(i) Joy will sit in the same car in which Krithick is sitting but Kannan is not in the same car.
(ii) Naraen and David can’t sit in the same car in which Krithick is sitting.
(iii) Baskar will sit in the car along with Joy and Aathi but not with Amar.

1. If Kannan and David are in the same car, then who is the other two person in that car?
a) Naraen and Amar b) Joy and Naraen
c) Baskar and Aathi d) Krithick and Joy
Answer: a) Naraen and Amar

Reason:
Let us name that two cars as Car 1 and Car 2.
The first condition is, Joy and Krithick are in the same car. Let them be in Car 1. Kannan is not sitting with them. So he should be in Car 2.

Naraen and David should not sit in the same car in which Krithick is sitting. Since Krithick is in Car 1, Naraen and David will be in Car 2.
Baskar is sitting along with Joy and Aathi. So Baskar and Aathi should be in Car 1. Also, Baskar is not sitting with Amar. Therefore, Amar should be in Car 2.

You can plot this information in a table as below.

Car 1 Car 2
Joy Kannan
Krithick Naraen
Aathi David
Baskar Amar

Now, you will find 2 more sub-questions. You can answer those based on the above table.

2. If Aathi and Krithick are sitting in the a car, then which of the following statement is true?
a) Kannan is sitting in the same car
b) Joy is not sitting in the same car
c) Baskar is sitting in the same car
d) David is sitting in the same car
Answer: c) Baskar is sitting in the same car

3. In which car does Amar is sitting?
a) car1 b) car2 c) None of these d) Data inadequate
Answer: b) car2

Type V: Family Based Questions

In this type, you have to arrange family members based on conditions. You will arrive at a family diagram. Based on your chart, you can answer the sub-questions.

Example Question 5: In a family, there are six persons P, Q, R, S, T and U. They are Teacher, Singer, Dancer, Doctor, Soldier and Nurse.
(i) The Teacher is the grandmother of U who is a Singer.

(iv) R, the doctor married the nurse.

1. What is the profession of S?
a) Teacher b) Singer c) Dancer d) Nurse
Answer: d) Nurse
Reason:
Based on the conditions (i) to (iv), you can easily draw the below family diagram.

U Singer

Based on the above diagram and table, we can easily answer the following sub-questions.

2. How is P related to R?
a) Father b) Uncle c) Father- in-law d) Data inadequate
Answer: d) Data inadequate
Reason:
Since the relation between R and P are not mentioned, we can’t say either P is father or father-in-law to R.

3. How is T related to P?
a) Father b) Uncle c) Father-in-law d) Grand Father
Answer: d) Grand Father

4. Whose profession is nurse?
a) Q b) S c) R d) None of these
Answer: b) S

5. What is the profession of T?
a) Soldier b) Doctor c) Dancer d) Singer
Answer: c) Dancer

Type VI: Plotting Multiple Attributes

This type is a bit confusing. In this, you have to identify the attributes correctly for the members. You have to read the question carefully and create a table or diagram based on the condition.

Below is an example.

Example Question 6: In a group of 5 girls P, Q, R, S and T one is intelligent, two are ambitious and two are honest. Two of them like orange colour and three of them like the pink colour. One wears Saree; two are in Chudithar, and other two are in Jeans. One of them likes the flower rose, two of them Jasmine and one of them Lotus.

Of those in pink color, two are honest and one is ambitious. Among the two girls liking Jasmine, one likes orange colour. R is in saree, ambitious and does not like neither Jasmine nor Lotus. P the ambitious likes Jasmine and is neither in saree nor Jeans. The person who is in Jeans like pink and is honest. Q likes Lotus is in Jeans and is neither ambitious nor intelligent. The person T is honest wears neither saree nor churidar and likes jasmine.

1. Which pair of persons like the flower lotus?
a) P, R b) P, S c) Q, S d) R, T
Answer: c) Q, S

Reason:
While solving these type of questions, start from the information which is given directly.
R is wearing saree and ambitious and does not like both Jasmine and Lotus. So R likes the flower rose. Hence, the attributes for R as Saree, Ambitious and Rose.

You can start plotting the values in a table. (You will find the final table at the end of this solution.)
P is ambitious and likes flower Jasmine and is neither in saree nor in jeans. So P is in churidar. Therefore, the attributes for P are Chudithar, Ambitious and Jasmine.

Q likes Lotus, is in Jeans and is neither ambitious nor intelligent. So Q is an honest person. The attributes for Q are Jeans, Honest and Lotus.
T is honest, wears neither saree nor churidar and likes jasmine. Therefore, T wears Jeans. The attributes for T are Saree, Honest and Jeans.

The person who is in Jeans like pink and is honest. T and Q are honest and is in Jeans. So either T or Q may like pink.
Of those in pink color, two are honest and one is ambitious. From this line, we can say that both T and Q like the pink color.

Among the two girls liking Jasmine, one likes orange colour. – P and T are the persons liking Jasmine. We know that T likes pink, so P likes orange color.
The other person who is ambitious and likes pink color is R.

So the remaining person is S and she is intelligent, wears churidar, likes orange color and lotus flower.
Based on our above explanations, the final table will be as shown below.

Persons Quality Dress Colour Flower
P ambitious Chudithar orange jasmine
Q honest jeans pink lotus
R ambitious saree pink rose
S intelligent chudithar orange lotus
T honest Jeans pink jasmine

Therefore, the answer for our first subquestion, “Which pair of persons like the flower lotus” is Q & S pair.
Based on the above table, you can answer all the other two sub questions.

2. Who is intelligent?
a) P b) R c) T d) S
Answer: d) S

3. Which of the following pair is honest?
a) P,Q b) R,T c) Q,T d) R,S
Answer: c) QT

4. Name the people who are in chudithar?
a) P,S b) Q,R c) R,T d) Q,S
Answer: a) P,S

5. Which of the following statement is true?
a) P and Q are honest and likes orange colour
b) S and P are in Saree and likes lotus
c) Q and T are in jeans and are honest
d) R and T likes pink colour and jasmine flower
Answer: c) Q and T are in jeans and are honest
